Meet Jim Irving: Young Professionals Board Member Extraordinaire
Jim Irving, Founding member of
LAF's Young Professionals Board
Last month, at the Chicago Bar Association and Foundation’s Pro Bono and Public Service Awards Luncheon, one of LAF’s most fervent young supporters was given a great award.  Jim Irving, who has been a member of LAF’s Young Professionals Board since its founding in 2009, was given the Maurice Weigle Exceptional Young Lawyer Award.  And then, as an even more exciting surprise, Jim donated the money that went with his award to LAF!
Jim is a bankruptcy and restructuring associate at DLA Piper LLP (US).  He is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from Williams College and Vanderbilt Law School.  When he moved to Chicago in 2008, he sought out an organization where he could network with other young professionals and give back to the community – he found those things in the LAF YPB.  He is constantly impressed by both the caliber of YPB members and the important meaningful work they are able to do with LAF.  He is always looking for opportunities to tell more people about LAF and encouraging them to get involved.
In his speech at the Chicago Bar Foundation’s Luncheon, Jim spoke of the importance of having opportunities in life to strive to reach one’s potential, and of his work as a pro bono advocate and expert in juvenile expungement issues at one of LAF’s many helpdesks.  You can view his whole speech here on youtube.
When asked what he thinks makes LAF’s work most important, he explained:  “Fifty years ago, James Baldwin wrote that it is expensive to be poor, and his words are true now more than ever.  The poor face injustices that would shock most of our society.  What is more, many of the neediest in our community aren’t aware of the services and remedies available to them to combat these injustices, or they can’t navigate the system in order to access those services and remedies.  LAF plays an absolutely critical role in making sure that the poor do have access to these services and remedies, and that justice isn’t only available for those who can pay for it.”
We are proud of all his work and excited to congratulate him on his success.  Way to go, Jim!

A special message
from LAF
Executive Director
Diana C. White
The 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s "I Have a Dream" speech this week made me reflect on Dr. King’s dream, that one day the fetters of poverty and discrimination would be lifted from the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Your support of LAF helps make that dream more of a reality for thousands of people living in Cook County.  It ensures we can continue to be there for the people who need us the most.
If you haven't had an opportunity yet this year to make a financial investment in our work, you can make a contribution online today.  Together, we can keep working towards the vision, and the ideals, Dr. King articulated so powerfully 50 years ago on a hot August day in our nation's capital.
I look forward to keeping you updated on the impact your investment has on the people we help.  Thank you again for joining us, and investing in equal justice.

Opinion on Chicago Housing Authority's Unfair Drug Policies
Larry Wood gets published for equality
LAF’s Larry Wood, Director of our Housing Practice Group, wrote an opinion piece in the Chicago Sun-Times this month.  You can read the whole piece on the Sun Times’ website here, or on our blog here.
He argues that the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) unfairly targets people of color with their drug testing policy.  ”The CHA’s mandatory drug-testing policy only exacerbates this problem because it reinforces the erroneous assumption that CHA residents — all of whom are poor, and most of whom are black — use illegal drugs more frequently than other groups,”  Larry points out.
Larry goes on to point out that “it is time to stop relying on policies that are based on such misguided preconceptions. There is no evidence that such policies are effective, and the CHA can reduce drug-related crime without them.”  Way to go, Larry!

LAF staff celebrate at our Summer Picnic
Earlier this month, all the staff from LAF got together out of the office, to celebrate another year’s worth of groundbreaking work and dedicated service.  We had a great time, sharing an afternoon full of barbecue, families, Frisbee games, and a piñata for the kids.
You can check out more photos from the picnic on our blog here.
